The most common requirement is for an individual to inspect a property (or other kind of risk in the Insurance industry) or a food establishment, swimming pool or septic tank (in the Environmental Health industry) and report on the status of that location.
Typically, the item needs to be re-inspected periodically to ensure that conditions have not deteriorated, or to ensure that requested improvements have been complied with.
In many cases there are follow-on activities which need to be tracked. In the Insurance industry, Inspectors often make "Recommendations" to the Client, which will either allow them to be put on policy or at least reduce their premiums. In the Environmental Health business process, there are sometimes "Violations" identified which must be tracked until the party involved complies with the local code or regulations.
Very often, a letter or certificate is provided to the Client in order to either highlight issues or as proof of meeting legislated requirements.
In many instances, external parties need to have access to at least some of the inspection information. In the Insurance industry, the Broker or Insured may be allowed to see at least the Recommendations so that they track the status of recommendations and perhaps indicate their compliance. In the Food Safety business, the Public is interested in seeing the results of Inspections so that they can make decisions on where it is safe to dine.
